CALAN (Verapamil) is used to treat high blood pressure. Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Verapamil belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily.
Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release tablet or capsule. Swallow it whole. If you have trouble swallowing an extended-release capsule whole, ask your doctor or pharmacist if it is safe for you to open the capsule and sprinkle the medicine into a spoonful of applesauce to make swallowing easier.
Common side effects of Calan include:
